I decided to drop most of my addresses at hotpop.com for discussion type emails now when Gmail have 2.8GB storage space, secure connections and no fees. I've been having long long standing problems in every incarnation of PowerMail since version 3 that kept a certain amount of hotpop.com addressed messages on server and only made them downloadable after I checked "download all messages left on server again". This messages had NEVER been downloaded before however. As I also had a related problem that left me no choice to ALWAYS delete messages after every server connection or PM would re-download every message indefinitely.
I've listened in on the connections (the logs which have been made known here in the past) when I had a similar problem on my own email server and separately volunteered to CTM to help find the cause of this problem so that users could be advised on how to change their settings or administrators of mail software could patch their systems to avoid this kind of problem (if the cause was to be found in the mailserver software) or in the event if PM did something less desirable to change this in a future update. On my own, however, I didn't have enough knowledge to pinpoint the problem, especially when I didn't have access to the server myself (as in the case of hotpop) . So far, my gmail addresses haven't given me any problems and the Gmail servers and PM seem to agree on what messages have been downloaded or not. So no re-downloaded messages. I'm going to check now and then on if messages on server never gets downloaded as have regularly been the case with hotpop and with my Apple server software (as supplied in Mac OS X Server 10.2).
