I tried Lion, but after several weeks of trying I came to the conclusion that apparently both my 2.33 GHz nor my 2.53 GHz Core2Duo MBP are too slow to handle its glory. And I must admit I did not care for the iOS-ness. So I reverted to Snow Leopard and it felt like I bought myself a new Mac.
PowerMail did work, even after the transition to iCloud, but using the settings of .Mac, i.e. mail.mac.com and smtp.mac.com I am not entirely sure if that is possible for all, or perhaps just the very early members of .Mac. Hope this helps!
