At Hope Creek:
Grand Gulf Nuclear Station requests information on how other stations set up
their electronic alarming dosimeters alarm set points for dose, dose rate, and
clock alarms (allowed time to be logged onto the RWP). The specific areas of
interest are below.
1. Do you use standard dose and rate alarms or are each RWP/Task set points
evaluated individually?
We have standard RWP set points for our RWP's but each RWP has tasks and the
set points for the task has its own set points if warranted.
Example: RWCU task 1 could have set points of Low dose alarm at 75 mRem, high
Dose Alarm at 125 mRem and a dose rate alarm of 400 mRem. Task 2 could be 25,
50, and 200, and task 3 could go back to 75, 125 and 400 depending on the tasks
and the ALARA breakdown.
* Give examples of the EAD set points for General or Standing RWPs for
RP, Chemistry, Maintenance, and Operations.
* Standard General RWP in 2011 is low dose alarm of 8 mRem, high dose
alarm of 12 mRem and a dose rate alarm of 80 mRem.
* Note we performed an evaluation of dose rates in the plant to
validate the set points and the data received on site ED's over 2010. We
learned that from Salem Station ALARA which gave us their strategy and did a
very good job evaluating the stations set points. Ted Neufang is their Rad Eng
Manager has the details, but it was very detailed and well orchestrated.
1. How many alarms for dose, rate and clock are received in a typical
non-outage year?
* <10 low dose alarms, no high dose alarms, < 20 dose rate alarms (valid)
have about 25-40 ED malfunction alarms from dropping, welding and other issues.
* What is your response to an EAD alarm? We write notifications for all
alarms and periodically perform evaluations to determine if there are issues
needing to be addressed.
* If you allow workers to work through anticipated dose rate alarms, how
is the alarm documented?
* We have a procedure and a document to do such that requires RPM
approval. Have only allowed 2X in the last 24 months.
Do you allow any work group(s) to remain logged on an RWP all shift or do you
require all workers to log off the RWP on each exit from the RCA? Yes, Shift
Chemistry, RP, Security, and Shift Operations. Others are suppose to sign out
after each entry.
