Unit -1 Browns Ferry change out 185 drives during start-up activities,
after this we were left with a mess in the sub-pile room dose rates
coming off sump was 300/ 200 / 120 mrem/hr. With a lot of work still
scheduled for the rod gallery we were pressed to reduce the dose rates.

We took an air operated vacuum with a transfer drum to processed the
sludge up to the reactor building main elevation 15 feet up. It took
about one hour (we did this on the lunch break to limit the amount of
people in the area). At the completion we were left 5 fifty five gallon
drums reading 5 R contact. Conditions in the sub-pile room were 15 / 8 /
4 mrem, no air problems.

Progress Energy's Brunswick Plant (BWR with a Mark II containment)
requests any information on clean-out of the Drywell sump(s) both outer
floor and equipment drains as well as under vessel sumps. Sump dose
rates, sludge disposal, man hour estimates, etc. Any information would
be greatly appreciated.
