Columbia Generating Station is using the Argos-5 A/B Whole Body Contamination
Monitor (WBCM). Prior to implementing the Argos WBCM our frequency of WBCM
alarms was very high in the fall and winter months due to increased Radon
levels. Supplementing the WBCM's, all alarms suspected of being attributed to
Radon are evaluated by HP Technicians using the Nuclear Enterprise CM-11
frisker. HP Technicians follow procedural guidance for evaluating and releasing
individuals suspected of alarming the WBCM due to Radon or Noble Gas Progeny
activity. Feel free to call or send me an e-mail if you have any further
questions.

Subject: Powernet: Radon problems

Recently our plant staff had a hard time exiting the protected area, alarming
the PM-7's.

Conditions:

After weeks of no rain we experience two straight days of rain on the second
day the temperature dropped significantly. We took water samples from standing
puddles and found radon products.

So the perfect radon storm, encapsulation, temperature inversion, displacement
and entrapment.

How does your station deal with radon problems?
