During the first cycle on-line period you will see increased activity and dose rates in primary system piping and the increase would be dependent on amount of zinc injected and duration. The activity is in the water NOT in the piping film layer. As the zinc begins to displace corrosion products from the core and some out of core piping you would see this increased RCS activity. Of course the increased activity results with higher dose rates on you RC and CV systems. This is a really good opportunity to install overlays in your on-line Letdown Demin beds. Unfortunately the deboration beds would not have an overlay but these are only used for short durations anyhow. You will also see a higher than normal dose rate forced oxidation demin bed during your refuel outage.

At Davis-Besse, we are preparing to inject depleted zinc. A question has come up regarding the potential for increased dose rates as we start this process. Did any of you who are or have injected your RCS with depleted zinc experience higher dose rates in the Auxiliary Building at the beginning of the process? If so, what system and what was the magnitude of increase? Thanks. ----------------------------------------- The information contained in this message is intended only for the personal and confidential use of the recipient(s) named above.
