Columbia's Response

1) How many Hot Spots does your station have? 41, this is down from a high
of 77.

2) What is your criteria for posting a Hot Spot (ie. 100 mrem/hr contact and
5 times the general area...)? An accessible Hot Spot, a Hot Spot is defined as
a component where
contact dose rates are greater than 100 mrem/hr and greater than five times the
general area dose rates.
.

3) What is your program requirements for flushing/removing Hot Spots? Hot
Spots are surveyed every six months and evaluated by the Radiological Planning
group for possible flushing to reduce G/A dose rates. If their evaluation
determines flushing will have an impact on reducing the plants Cumulative
Radiation Exposure a work order will initiated to flush the system and attempt
to reduce or remove the Hot Spot. Additionally, our routine survey program
contains a supplementary 158 trending points throughout the power block which
are evaluated weekly by the Radiological Planning group for possible
decontamination or shielding.

Subject: Powernet: Three Simple Questions for your Hot Spot Program

In an attempt to gauge our HOT SPOT Program with other facilities and improve
our ALARA Program, the San Onofre ALARA Planning Team have several questions:
1) How many Hot Spots does your station have?
2) What is your criteria for posting a Hot Spot (ie. 100 mrem/hr contact and 5
times the general area...)?
3) What is your program requirements for flushing/removing Hot Spots?
