North Anna's response:

We have the newer iPCMs and older Eleberline PCM 1B/1C. We struggle with radon
due to our location and well water issues with worker's clothing.

Procedure guidance -

DETERMINE which of the following methods will be used to provide reasonable
assurance the PCM or PM alarms are due to radon, noble gas or their various
decay products.
a. Clothing and personal items are analyzed using a gamma spectroscopy system
b. Whole Body Count
c. Air samples are analyzed using a gamma spectroscopy system d. Direct frisk
using a CM-11, Delta-5 or equivalent instrument and site specific ratio of beta
to alpha radioactivity on item is measured, if
applicable.
e. Count rate taken at two different times (at least 10 minutes apart)
determines contamination to be short lived (count rate decreases quickly over
short period of time).

IF the source of the PCM or PM zone(s) in alarm exhibits one or more of the
following characteristics AND other indications using one or more of the
methods as specified above are positive, THEN CONSIDER the activity is due to
radon, noble gas or their decay products.
* A pattern (e.g., both left and right pants legs indicate similar
contamination)
* Concentration of contamination around friction points or areas known to
generate static electricity (e.g., knees, badge, hardhat, etc.)
* Distributed contamination on clothing made of materials known to generate
static electricity (e.g., polyester, nylon, wool, silk, etc.)

IF clothing and personal items are analyzed using a gamma spectroscopy system
OR Whole Body Count results verify the absence of nuclides other than naturally
occurring isotopes for each alarm event
THEN RELEASE clothing, personal item or individual.

Subject: Powernet: How do you deal with Radon at your plant?

With the dry weather in Southern California, we get a big Radon affect. What
works at your facility to allow the workforce ease in exiting RCA's effected by
Radon during the monitoring process? Do you have Radon discriminating
monitoring equipment?
