John,

Braidwood response:

Several reasons for lower cavity activity.

RCS activity at flood up has been below 0.02 mCi/cc (not 0.05 as EPRI suggests)

RWST has been about 7E-7 mCi/cc before flood up to further dilute. Upcoming
outage we plan on being 9E-8 which is phenomenal.

Put in about 6 gallons hydrogen peroxide in cavity before drain down.

Use hydrogen peroxide for cavity decon

These and other techniques have been used and discussed at recent PWR RP/Alara
Association meetings. Great opportunity to benchmark industry and directly ask
your industry peers all any questions you have concerning improving Alara
programs.

Subject: Powernet: Do You Allow Workers to Enter Cavity During Rx Head Set
Without Respiratory Protection?

It is probably easier for you to reply via email, but I would enjoy talking
with you.

When we drain the cavity following refueling we typically find contamination
levels exceeding 1,000,000 dpm/100 cm2 and multiple spots >1 rem/hour on
contact. We, therefore, prescribe plastic suits and PAPHs for an HP and SRO to
enter the cavity during reactor head set.

I was challenged to determine why other plants experience contamination levels
< 200,000 dpm/100 cm2 and are able to allow entry into the cavity without
respiratory protection during reactor head set.

1. What are your typical radiological conditions in the cavity during
reactor head set at your station (e.g., contamination levels)

2. What are your station’s requirements for respiratory protection and
protective clothing for workers in the cavity during reactor head set?

3. Also, is there feasibly anything that can be done to improve Surry’s
radiological conditions in the cavity during reactor head set? We do not have
polished cavity surfaces and do not perform ultrasonic cleaning of spent fuel.

A quick response would be greatly appreciated.
