I choose configuration 1 over configuration 3 whenever I can because after a 
worker clears the beta/alpha monitor, I am fairly confident that the worker is 
not tracking loose surface contamination around. When possible, I much prefer 
to have RCA exit monitors inside the RCA so my licensed radioactive material is 
in the RCA when I find it on a worker.

That said, I have worked at a plant with chronically high background at the RCA 
exit, and there it made sense to put the gamma exit monitors around the corner 
to achieve adequate sensitivity.

I understand. And just for clarification - CGS answer is also No.  I was just 
asking out of curiosity.

And consider also the other side of the “risk” coin.  An individual could cross 
the threshold of the beta monitor into the RCA between the monitors and not 
“technically” exit the RCA.  They may not be aware there is a difference in 
detection capabilities of the two monitors (5k dpm vs. 35 nCi) and therefore 
not recognize the RCAs are not the same - although both are posted (RCA) 
identically.

So I understand there are always risks. While I have not seen those situations 
arise. But this topic started me thinking about possibilities.  Perhaps others 
may take a now closer look as well and see if vulnerability exists.   That’s 
the thing about Powernet we can think as well as share our thoughts with others.

Option 3 – Another risk, depending on where the gamma monitor is located (e.g., 
exit to protected area) that you could miss a potential intake of radioactive 
material should no one challenge the alarm.

The risk of using configuration 3 is that if you have a verified alarm with the 
gamma monitor (or alpha/beta monitor as in configuration 4), you have 
radioactive material outside the RCA.
