Betsy, I would design the detector in a waterproof housing that would be left at the site or disposed of. Simple strippable coatings have been used with some success as well as plastic sleeving. Are you working with companies that design and market underwater detectors? I'm assuming radiation detectors or are these thermocouple/level indicators...?
