Duke Energy Response: Duke Energy has Centralized Environmental Monitoring, Dosimetry and Instrument Calibration Labs.
We utilize a program called Sample Manager (Laboratory Information Management System) provided by Thermo Scientific. This system is a very powerful and highly customizable database system. It tracks our laboratory analyses and QA/QC, as well as our instrument inventory (portable and fixed contamination monitors) cradle to grave. The system is a client/server based system that has been highly customized and has been built around the Duke Energy programs. From the instrument stand point all fleet RP instruments are bar coded with a metal printed tag. The system tracks all equipment history cross references serial numbers to Duke Energy (ENRad) numbers. Every calibration, repair and source check performed on Duke Energy Instruments is tracked in this database. The second part of the Duke Energy system is an HTML based system called the Instrument Reservation System (IRS). This system is used to Reserve(check out) and Return instruments. The IRS system interfaces with the Sample Manager System and validates if an instrument in in calibration and required source checks and response checks have been performed. It will not allow the instrument to be reserved if the instrument is out of calibration or required checks have not been performed. Sample Manager reports can provide data such as what site and instrument is located at, instruments coming due for calibration, instruments that have been source checked, instruments that were checked out and not returned, When and Who checked out and returned an instrument. It also tracks all shipments between the Central Calibration Facility and the 6 Fleet Nuclear Sites. If the instrument did not perform correctly or failed while in use the technician returning the instrument clicks on a check box during the return process in IRS and the instrument is removed form service and IRS will not allow it be reserved again until it is repaired, recorded in the history file and returned to the available state. This is just a glimpse into the power that the Sample Manager and IRS programs have. There may be less powerful and less expensive programs out there but this is the Cadillac program that we use to track the complete instrument history on every instrument across the 6 site fleet. If you would like additional information feel free to contact me. I'll be glad to share any information I have and you could even come for a visit and I could show how it all works if you'd like. Thermo is very supportive of the system and will customize their system to you site and provide training for your site administrators. Any information regarding the type of program used, features, examples, station contact, etc. would be appreciated.
