Subject: [powernet] Irradiator Vendor PM Frequency

TVA External Message. Please use caution when opening.
Hi All,

For those who have and operate Shepherd calibrators/irradiators such as Model
89, 81, 78, etc. or Hopewell units:

We have two JL Shepherd Model 89 irradiators on our site. These are used to
perform source response checks on dose rate instruments. No calibrations are
performed with these irradiators at our facility.

1. How often do you do preventive maintenance on your irradiators? Annually,
Bi-annually, 5 years, when they're broke?

We perform preventative maintenance on our Model 89 when needed, typically
cleaning and lamp changes. We refer to this as "routine maintenance." See
NUREG-1556 volume 5 for the definition.

2. Is it done in-house or by a vendor?

Most routine maintenance is performed in-house using the JL Shepherd checklist.
Non-routine maintenance is performed by a vendor, individuals or companies
authorized to conduct repairs by the Commission.

Thanks!

Rick
