Exelon does corrections for both smears and air samples. Our process has you
either determine the instrument efficiency with a source that simulates
self-absorption (such a Mylar covered standards or a simulated filter paper) or
if an electro-deposited standard is used, factor in a 30% sample attenuation by
multiplying the measured (electro-deposited) efficiency by 0.7.

This is in part based on an article by Robert McFarland titled “Determination
of Alpha-Particle Counting Efficiency for Wipe-Test Samples”, Radioactivity &
Radiochemistry Vol. 9, No. 1, 1998.

I prefer the having the self-absorption included in the efficiency as it is
less numbers for RPTs to remember and/or plug in to a calculator.

I would always recommend smear corrections. You could justify lower
self-absorption factors if you used a membrane filter (e.g., 5 µm PTFE) but
they are much more expensive.

Ginna calibrates using a NIST traceable impregnated filter source to account
for alpha self-absorption.

The Perry Nuclear Power Plant would like to know:

1 – Do you have a site specific Alpha air sample self-absorption factor?

2 – If yes, what is the value?

3 – Was the value based upon site testing or other means?

4 – Please provide contact information if answering “yes”:

Thank you.
