We are looking to learn how others sample filters for 10CFR Part 61 analysis. In particular, we have filters with a heavier gauge steel screen that our current filter punch will not penetrate. Also, some of these filters are stored underwater in the Spent fuel Pool. These are inside loading filters (i.e. the water enters the center and exits the outer surface). What experience do you have with alternate sampling methods, we have cut filters that have not been in the pool of this type in the past, but this evolution has risks associated with it. We have tried smears with limited success (difficulty getting enough activity on the smear) and smear rinsing off as it is brought up through the pool.
