Thought this was worth sharing... Worker alarmed GEM-5 at PAP caused by a commercially available consumer product. RP responding surveyed the worker and verified them with no detectable activity with a survey instrument and then escorted the worker to an alternate location to perform a detailed alarm investigation. Worker was asked to remove shoes to survey inside of shoe and at that time worker mentioned that they did have a small shoe insert they had recently purchased. The shoe insert was removed and discovered to have 4000 ccpm fixed, no detectable loose activity, and would alarm the GEM-5. Worker and shoes were verified clean and able to pass the GEM-5 without alarms once the shoe inserts were removed. Shoe inserts were sent for gamma spectroscopy which identified gamma emitting isotopes of manganese, thallium, bismuth, lead, radium, actinium, thorium, and, neptunium. A follow up call was made with the company (PHARMORIGINS) to validate the makeup of the insert material. The specific insert is named Fusion IONZ Kur Shoe Inserts. A company representative explained the inserts do use negative ionization and contain crushed tourmaline (a crystalline boron silicate material compounded with aluminum, iron, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and lithium). Representative also stated that there is additional clothing being processed that is expected to be enhanced with this material due to its perceived health benefits (i.e copper bracelets/magnets) that would cause monitors to alarm.
