UN secretary general`s special envoy visiting Papua

Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA News) - A special envoy of the United Nations secretary
general, Hina Jilani, arrived here Friday on a Garuda Indonesia flight for a
two-day visit.

Jilani arrived in Sentani airport at 7.45 a.m. after an eight-hour flight from
Cengkareng airport in Banten province with transits at Denpasar`s Ngurah Rai
airport and Timika in the country`s easternmost province of Papua.

Papua administration officials as well as Papua and West Irian Jaya human
rights activists welcomed Jilani at Sentani airport.

Papua Governor Barnabas Suebu was not present at the airport as he was on a
40-day tour of the northern coastal and mountainous areas of less developed
Papua province which he began last June 4.

During her stay in Jayapura, Jilani is scheduled to meet with provincial
administration officials, military and police chiefs, members of the provincial
legislative assembly and the Papuan People`s Council (MRP) as well as religious
and non-governmental organization leaders.

At a meeting with Constitutional Court Chairman Jimly Asshiddiqie in Jakarta on
Wednesday, Jilani asked the Indonesian government to pay due attention to the
protection of human rights campaigners.

She said the United Nations was really concerned about protection of human
rights campaigners and poor people`s access to justice.

Jilani was also scheduled to visit Aceh, the country`s westernmost province.

She will hold a press conference in Jakarta on June 12 on the results of her
visit to Indonesia. (*)
