Gasoline prices in Timika skyrocket

Timika, Papua (ANTARA News) - Timika residents in Indonesia`s easternmost
province of Papua were burdened by skyrocketing fuel prices during a week of
shortage of supplies.

If those in most parts of the country just pay Rp4,500 for a liter of gasoline,
Timika residents on Thursday had to pay Rp35,000 (US$3.5) to get one and a half
liter of gasoline.

Alimudin, 30-year-old fuel street vendor, said he had to raise the price after
noticing fuel stock shortages in the area.

"I started increasing the price from Rp20,000 - Rp25,000 to Rp35,000 per one
and a half liter of gasoline since Wednesday night," he said.

This shortage of fuel had caused a two-kilometer long queue of hundreds of
motorbikes and cars for gasoline at two fuel stations in Timika over the past
week.

In response to the situation, Nawaripi fuel station`s supervisor, Rifai, said
the state oil company, Pertamina, just delivered him eight to 10 kilo litres a
day over the past six days.

That supply was much lower than 29 kilo litres a day he normally received from
Pertamina, he said.

The late arrivals of oil tankers from Wayase seaport in Maluku city of Ambon
due to bad weather might trigger the scarcity of Pertamina`s stocks here, he
said. (*)
