They also planned to attack hotels in Jakarta, in an action modelled on the Mumbai siege of 2008. The attacks were designed to cause chaos and be a prelude to the group, which dubbed itself al-Qaeda in Aceh, declaring Indonesia a nation based on Islamic law. ''They planned to target the Indonesian President, state officials and foreign guests attending the ceremony,'' the national police chief, Bambang Hendarso Danuri, said yesterday. If the US President, Barack Obama, had come to Indonesia in March as intended, the group planned to attack foreigners in Aceh to coincide with the visit. The group was well financed by Indonesian donors, with about 1 billion rupiah ($121,000) recovered since police first disrupted the cell in February. Since the cell was detected, large amounts of weaponry and ammunition have been recovered and about 70 suspected militants arrested or killed. The revelations of the plans came from interrogations of those who were captured. General Danuri said the group had smuggled the weapons in from the southern Philippines and were planning to bring in several rocket launchers. The tactics were apparently inspired by the Mumbai siege, in which more than 150 people were killed in the Indian commercial capital over three days.
