Confident Hayaa
by Saima Siddiqui
A year after the two girls had originally met, their
friendship had grown beyond what they had expected.
They talked about everything and anything; they had a
perspective common to all, but uncommon to most.
Kunza: You wanna meet me at the car? I hafta go to the
ATM to get some money.
Shajeeah: Ok, I have to go to the bathroom anyway,
Insha'Allah I'll meet you at the car.
(Kunza and Shajeeah at the car)
Kunza: It's open hon. Shajeeah: Oh, I always forget.
(Kunza starts the car)
Kunza: Are you hungry? You wanna stop by to get
something to eat ?
Shajeeah: Naah, I'm okay.
Kunza: You sure?
Shajeeah: Yeah, unless you wanna...
Kunza: Naah, I'm okay. I just had DP before the
meeting.
Shajeeah: What's the matter, there's a sort of
freshness and at the same time tiredness on your face
today...
Kunza: Nothing, I just have a lot of stuff on my
mind...
Shajeeah: Anything I can help with ? You wanna talk
about it ?
Kunza: Naah, it's ok.
Shajeeah: You sure?
Kunza: Well, I'm graduating next year, and my mom has
approached me with a proposal she got...
Shajeeah: OOOOOOhhh... anyone I know ? (smiles)
Kunza: Naah, I dunno him either...
Shajeeah: Did she gave you any info about him ? Like
what he does, where he studied ?
Kunza: Yeah.. the usual. He's a lawyer. He graduated
from Yale...
Shajeeah: Hmm, a lawyer eh ?
Kunza: I shouldn't say this.. but gimme a break.
Shajeeah: (laughs) Why?
Kunza: C'mon, how much you wanna bet that his
character is like nil.
Shajeeah: I'm sure he can't be that bad...
Kunza: But he could be..
Shajeeah: So why don't you find out more about him ?
Don't you know anyone that knows him ?
Kunza: Yeah, well, I'm actually making
salaat-ul-istiqhaara these days... I mean like, who
knows him better than Allah.
Shajeeah: True, very true.
Kunza: And who knows me better than Allah.
Shajeeah: Absolutely.
Kunza: I mean like, a person's character is an
important part in a guy to my parents, but
unfortunately, because of this "culture" factor, so is
his "professional status".. forget economical or
social status.. its the professional status that
counts more these days. Parents mostly want doctors or
engineers... and lately, the computer science field
has also opened up for them ...
Shajeeah: Not all parents honey...
Kunza: Yeah, not all parents... but most do. And I'm
sick of it. I need someone to help stimulate me
spiritually... Allah gives you wealth and work and He
can take it away anytime He wills...
Shajeeah: Yeah. true dat.
Kunza: I need someone who is like how I want my
children to be. Someone who knows the essence of
responsibility to the spouse, family and community...
Shajeeah: Good luck hon.
(They both laugh)
Kunza: No, really, how many guys do know of that
really really follow the Sunnah of the Prophet
sallalahu alayhi wasalaam. Like try to follow his
character, his ways of fairness, his courage, AND the
way he dealt with women...
Shajeeah: I don't know...Not many. Especially in our
community back home...
(Kunza sighs)
Kunza: I know that Allah will give me the best
whatever it may be... the best for me... because I
myself am weak in many things... but I want someone to
be better than me in spirituality.. to be at a level
different from me so that he can help uplift me...
Shajeeah: Yeah, like I've determined that guys fall
into 3 major categories. There are those on one
extreme that are totally free with gals and like don't
see anything wrong in it. Then there are those on the
opposite extreme where there afraid of even saying
salaam to their muslim sister. THEN, there are those
who have "confident hayaa". They will pass by a sister
and without even looking up at her, they'll say
salaam. And you won't even know who went passed you
and said salaam to you. And frankly, you wouldn't even
care because what counts is the salaam and how it
makes you feel all peaceful and warm and fuzzy. And
they'll be courteous, and be professional, and be
polite. Respecting their limits and respecting my
rights...
(Kunza drives up to the toll)
Toll Lady: Thank You.
Kunza: (to toll lady) You're welcome.
Kunza: (to Shajeeah): A rare breed honey, a rare
breed.
Shajeeah: But they exist! (smiles)
Kunza: Yeah sure. You find someone like that for me
and I'll send my proposal to him.
Shajeeah: Is that a deal ?
Kunza: You have my word. (pulls up into the driveway)
I love the turnpike.. you never get any traffic at
this time.
Shajeeah: Yeah. I saw your speed honey.
Kunza: (smiles) Whaaat ?
Shajeeah: (laughs) Nothing. Anyway, next week, Ill
find out more info and I'll let you know.
Kunza: You mean that breed is actually in this STATE ?
Shajeeah: (laughs) Yeah. What did you think ? You had
to import it from Canada or something ?
Kunza: (laughs) Yeah. Or Syria.
(they both laugh)
Kunza: Ok, Ill see you next week hon.
Shajeeah: Thanks for the ride home. As-salaamu
alaikum,
Kunza: Wa'alaikum as-salaam, no problem hon.
