Subject: [IPOMS-APICS] [Manufacturing Scholarship] Toyota Fellow
Program, University of Kentucky, USA

Toyota Production System/Lean Manufacturing/Just-in-Time/Pull Production

Study Lean Manufacturing as a

Toyota Fellow

http://www.crms.engr.uky.edu/lean/tf_main.html

For students who want to help shape the future of manufacturing, the
University of Kentucky (UK) offers a special opportunity. The Toyota
Fellows Program is a chance to study lean manufacturing in the ideal
classroom -- inside the company that developed the Toyota Production
System, a key element in this innovative new approach to making
products.
Students will combine traditional classroom learning with a variety of
experiential hands-on projects. Led by UK faculty from the College of
Engineering and by staff engineers from the UK Center for Manufacturing
, the Fellows take part in workshops and simulations offered by the
center Lean Manufacturing program. In addition, each Fellow undertakes a
semester-long internship at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky
(Georgetown) or Toyota Motor Manufacturing, North America (Erlanger).

Guided by the spirit of the lean approach, the Toyota Fellows Program
stresses the creative and the innovative. Students master the lean
fundamentals and then go on to contribute original research that will
help advance and enrich this transformative approach to manufacturing.
Cross-disciplinary work is supported and actively encouraged.

To Apply:

The first step in becoming a Toyota Fellow is to apply to a University
of Kentucky graduate program relevant to lean manufacturing. Relevant
programs include all engineering disciplines, business/economics, and
communications.
Once accepted, apply to become a Toyota fellow. Individuals with a B. S.
in engineering from an American Board of Engineering and Technology
(ABET) accredited institution may apply to the M. S. program. Students
with an M. S. may apply to the Ph. D. program. For either program,
submit a resume, college transcripts, and a list of three references to:

Dr. Kozo Saito
Faculty Associate
UK Center for Manufacturing
Professor, Mechanical Engineering
University of Kentucky
Lexington KY 40506-0108
Phone: (859) 257-6262 ext. 502

Stipend: For those seeking the M. S., the stipend is $18, 000 per
calendar year. For those seeking the Ph. D., the stipend is $20, 000.
All Toyota fellows receive full academic tuition waiver. The fellowship
is renewable.

A Message from Dr. Saito

An undergraduate degree in engineering is an important step in the
process but it isn't the whole story. There is a bigger, more complex,
more interesting world of engineering than the one students are often
exposed to in an undergraduate program.

For those adventurous students who wish to explore beyond the boundaries
of the typical, the Toyota Fellows program offers a special path for
growth and exploration. You will learn from lean manufacturing experts
who are changing something very basic in our world: how products are
made. You will get your eyes opened (and your hands dirty) during an
internship at nearby Toyota. The research you do as a Toyota Fellow will
have an impact on how lean manufacturing works in the real world.

You will also learn from your fellow students - who might be from the
U.S., Malaysia, Germany, Jordan or any number of other countries.
Opportunities to exchange ideas and insights will develop during
projects or the internship or the regular meetings of the lean
manufacturing student association. Out of those exchanges will come a
valuable lesson in one of the most difficult and most vital aspects of
creative engineering: the ability to see the world differently. To work
and learn with fellow engineers from other cultures will help you see
your world with new eyes.
