Begini, Mas Nur Rahmat. Intinya, saya percaya pada potensi positif manusia. Dan potensi terbesar bagi kemajuan adalah kecerdasan dan akal budi, dan ini dipunyai oleh orang Indonesia sebagian besar. Cuma, sayangnya belum terarah. Potensi ini harus diarahkan oleh orang tua, guru, lingkungan masyarakat, dan ... negara. Tidak boleh disia-siakan. Jarang saya lihat pemuda India yang santai, mereka kalau bisa ingin jadi nomor satu. Kenapa begitu? Rupanya kemelaratan disekitarnya yang memecut mereka. Kemauan mereka juga mendapat dorongan besar dari orang tua. Di Indonesia juga begitu, cuma derajatnya yang beda. Anak India bercita-cita jadi apa? Jauh sebelum jadi presiden, Abdul Kalam banyak berdialog dengan anak-anak. Kebanyakan mereka ingin jadi dokter, atau insinyur, atau ahli roket seperti Pak Kalam, jadi guru, jadi seniman besar. Tidak ada yang ingin jadi pegawai negeri, apalagi jadi politikus. Aspirasi anak-anak itu mencerminkan dorongan dari rumah. Di sini bedanya kita dan India, lihat saja judul diskusi di milis kita tercinta (maaf), yang tidak jauh berkisar dari hal yang itu-itu saja. Kemajuan India diberati oleh kemelaratan dan kesenjangan kasta yang luar biasa. Kita harus bersyukur karena kita tidak punya soal seberat ini. Masalahnya hanya karena kita banyak menyia-nyiakan waktu dan enerji untuk hal-hal yang kurang perlu.
