U R Rao among 10 international space personalities
New Delhi, Sept. 1. (PTI): U R Rao, the country's eminent space scientist, has been ranked among the top 10 international personalities who have made a difference in civil, commerce and military space in the world since 1989, by a US space weekly. The former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation and currently the Chairman of the Research Council of Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, is widely regarded as the man who guided India to the status of major space power, the weekly 'Space News' said. During his tenure, India developed its own communication satellites, weather satellites, high resolution imaging satellites and a polar satellite launch vehicle, a release from the ISRO said on Tuesday. "One of the testaments to Rao's skill is that he built such a robust space programme in a democratic country, which is much more difficult than in countries with autocratic rulers, an analyst of Asian space programme and Chair of the Department of national security decision-making at the Naval War College in Newport," the weekly said. Rao emphasised the importance of keeping the space programme focused on technology that would aid the country's development such as imaging and communication satellites, the release said. The country, with a maturing space industry, is now planning a science satellite and even discussing the possibility of a human space flight in a few decades, the 'Space News' said. Rao was unanimously elected to preside over the UN Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE-III) held in Vienna in July 1999, the release said. ------------------------ Yahoo!
