Number of Indian students in US rises by 7%

PTI[ WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2004 07:55:08 PM]
NEW DELHI: The decline in the number of foreign
students in the US notwithstanding, Indian student
enrolments continued to increase for the fourth
consecutive year and India remains the leading
contributor of students to that country.

"The number of Indian students in the US has increased
sharply over last year, jumping by seven per cent over
last year," US deputy chief of mission Robert O Blake
announced here on Wednesday.

Quoting from a study conducted by the Institute of
International Education (IIE), a New York-based
non-profit organisation, Blake said at present, there
were 79,736 Indian students in the US, beating China,
which is at second place with 61,765 students.

"This is in contrast to stories in local papers that
somehow the US has lost its historical edge in
attracting India's top students. In fact, we are more
popular than ever," he said, also informing that the
number of Indian students in the US has doubled over
the past five years.

However, the rate of growth in the number of Indian
students, according to the annual `Open Doors' report
on international academic mobility, has fallen from
the prior year's dramatic 12 per cent growth.

Overall, there has been a decline of 2.4 per cent in
the number of forein students in the US, with the
2003-04 total standing at 5,72,509, and major
conributors like China and Japan showing a decrease.

While the numbers fell by five per cent for China,
there was a decrease of 11 per cent for Japan.

According to the study, the decline in international
students in the US could be due to a variety of
reasons, including real and perceived difficulties in
obtaining student visas, especially in scientific and
technical fields.

Also among the possible reasons cited are rising US
tution costs and vigorous recruitent activties by
other English-speaking nations as well as perceptions
abroad that foreign students may no longer be welcome
in the US.

Meanwhile, Blake informed that with the aim of
attracting more Indian students and to expedite the
visa processing, the US has opened 22 new positions in
visa sections throughout India in addition to 12 new
visa windows.

"The US Department of State has placed particular
priority on expediting student visas to ensure that
every student is interviewed for a visa at least two
weeks before he or she is due to arrive in the US," he
said.

On being asked about the limiting of H1B job visas to
the country, Blake said that the US Congress would
definitely consider raising its cap in its first
sitting, due to pressure from business houses and
other establishments.

The Deputy Chief of Mission also briefed about the
upcoming International Education Week to be held from
November 15-19 in India as well as 85 other countries,
saying its aim was to promote support for education
exchange between the US and other countries.
