Indonesia seeks help to fight terror

PTI[ MONDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2004 12:40:08 AM]
VIENTIANE: Indonesia today sought India's cooperation to counter terrorism
and jointly patrol the seas. Indonesian president Susilo Banbag Yudhoyono
suggested this during talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Mr Singh said that stretching from Afghanistan to the Philippines, terrorism
was a common predicament and what was needed was a bilateral and
multilateral arrangement to collectively stand against the menace, according
to national security adviser JN Dixit.

The Indonesian leader also sought defence co-operation with India and
emphasised on maritime security, joint patrolling in the seas and suggested
an institutional arrangement.

In separate bilateral meetings with the prime minister, the leaders of
Vietnam and Laos extended support to India's candidature in an expanded
United Nations Security Council.

The two crucial South East Asian countries extended their support when their
prime ministers Bounnhang Vorachith and Phan Van Khai held talks with Mr
Singh.

Both Mr Vorachith and Mr Khai told the Indian prime minister that there were
several areas, including power, agriculture, biotechnology, science and
technology and peaceful use of nuclear energy where they could cooperage.

The Laos prime minister told Mr Singh that his country was emerging as a
regional entity and was a co-ordinating member in the Asean and sought help
from India in agriculture, particularly modernisation of agriculture. Mr
Singh responded positively to his suggestion, Mr Dixit said.

The Vietnamese leader reminded the prime minister of his country's close
ties with the Congress party and recalled the late prime minister Jawaharlal
Nehru's visit to the country thirty years ago.

He also sought co-operation from India in defence and military equipment as
well as spare parts. Indonesia also told Mr Singh about its plans to
organise a function on the anniversary of the First Bandung Conference and
invited India to attend it as one of the founders.

Both Indonesia and Vietnam extended invitations to Mr Singh to visit their
countries and in return, the Indian prime minister also requested them to
visit India.
