24 January 2005. A World to Win News Service. A paramilitary force called the
Rapid Action Brigade (RAB) is mounting a terror campaign against Bangladesh
Maoists and other revolutionaries and progressives. On the evening of 16
December they arrested Mufaqqar Chowdhury in the capital, Dhaka, and killed him
later that same night. After that they circulated a note to the press claiming
that Chowdhury had been killed in a �crossfire� during an encounter (firefight)
in a village in the Kushtia district. Comrade Chowdhury was the secretary of
the Communist Party of East Bengal (Marxist-Leninist) and a leader in the
founding of that Maoist party in 1976. A leader of the Proletarian Party of
Purba Bangla (PBSP) CC, Comrade Nisim, was killed last July in southern
Bangladesh. The RAB also murdered members of other Maoist parties and many
other different organisations. All in all, they killed 119 people from June
through December, according to the Daily Ajker Kagoj (1 January).
The RAB is supposedly a state organisation but in reality it is the private
army of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party of Prime Minister Kaleda Zia, which
has run the country in alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami and two other parties
since 2001. Using the excuse of reactionary bomb attacks, they began by staging
fake encounters to justify the murder of members of the Awami League, which
carried out the same kind of tactics when it was in power and is hated by the
people The fighting between these two parties represents a clash between
different factions of Bangladesh�s ruling classes. The RAB engaged in dacoity
(robbery), rape, extortion and the like against the masses, including the
middle class and even upper class people. Soon, they began concentrating on
killing revolutionary leaders and political activists. At first there were
scattered murders in the north and south, but now, in the name of wiping out
�terrorism�, an all-out terrorist campaign of �crossfire� killings has
developed.
With the same pretext, Kaleda Zia�s BNP government has signed a military
cooperation treaty with the US, and there is discussion of building an American
base in Chittagong. Bangladesh Maoists have linked the death squad campaign
against revolutionaries with this American military penetration and put it in
the context of US interference in Nepal against the Maoist-led people�s war.
Thirty years ago this month, on 2 January 1975, Siraj Sikdar, was murdered in
a similar phoney encounter killing by the Rakkhi Bahini, a paramilitary force
linked to the Awami League. Sikdar was the founder of the PBSP. This
anniversary was commemorated by a procession and the placing of flowers on his
grave in the morning, and that afternoon a rally at Dhaka University held by a
number of mass organisations. Speakers denounced the RAB as the successor to
the Rakkhi Bahini. They also opposed the American invasions of Iraq and
Afghanistan and US-India moves against the people�s war in Nepal, among other
slogans. Observations of the anniversary of Siraj Sikdar�s murder also took
place in Chittagong, Mymensingh, Rajsahi and elsewhere in Bangladesh.
