Newmont Indonesia to continue investments JAKARTA - US gold mining company Newmont Indonesia Limited said it will invest US$104 million more in Indonesia to develop its gold mining concession despite charges of heavy pollution. Vice president Robert Gallagher said the company will not postpone its investment plan this year only because of the Buyat Bay case in which government has said it will charge the company with heavily polluting the Buyat Bay in north Sulawesi where it has closed its gold mine. Gallagher said his company planned to invest $90 million in the development of a gold mine in Batu Hijau, in West Nusatenggara, $5 million in gold explorations in Sumbawa and $9 million in the expansion of Martabe gold mine in North Sumatra. He said the company has long-term investment plans in the country and that would not change because of the Buyat case. Newmont's gold-mining investment in Indonesia is still a priority, Gallagher said, in addition to similar ventures in the United States, Peru and Australia.
