Tuesday May 3, 5:36 AM Indonesia Restricts Chicken Imports From Malaysia
JAKARTA, May 3 Asia Pulse - The Ministry of Agriculture will restrict Indonesia's poultry imports from Malaysia until the neighboring country is declared totally free from the avian flue (AI). "We will restrict the import of chickens. We have asked AI-free regions, such as South Sumatra, to be more selective in the supply of chickens," Minister for Agriculture Anton Apriyono said here on Monday. He added that the ministry will also establish coordination with related institutions to discuss measures in dealing with the the virus. "We will discuss the preventive measures, ask for confirmation from Malaysia and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). Later, we will make an announcement to the public on the latest development," he added. On control and supervision in the border regions, he said it will be difficult to cover the entire border region, especially along the boundary with Malaysia in Kalimantan. He also admitted the ministry was short of officers to cover the whole of Kalimantan. And even if chicken supplies passed the border area in Kalimantan, it would be on a small scale, he added. The ministry had revoked a circular of the directorate general for poultry production No.832/HK.340/F/03.05 dated March 10, 2005, on an agreement of chicken supplies from Malaysia.
