This is outrageous and truly a mockery of justice. Unfortunately a golden
rule (the one who has gold rules) still applies in many cases back home. Again
it?s simply despicable and disgraceful.
Adiguna gets seven years for murder of waiter
JAKARTA (Antara): The Central Jakarta District Court sentenced wealthy
businessman Adiguna Sutowo on Thursday to seven years' jail for the murder of a
Jakarta Hilton Hotel waiter, a sentence that lawyers for the victim's family
called a "mockery" of justice.
The panel of judges presided over by Lilik Mulyadi found Adiguna guilty of
shooting to death Yohannes Berchmans "Rudy" Haerudy Natong, a waiter at the
Hilton's swank Fluid club, and of possessing a firearm illegally.
The judges argued, however, that a life sentence demanded by prosecutors was
too severe, saying there were mitigating factors.
The maximum sentence for murder in Indonesia is lifeimprisonment, while the top
penalty for the illegal possession of a firearm is death by firing squad.
Prosecutors said Adiguna shot Rudy, 25, in the head after being informed his
debit card could not be used to settle a Rp 150,000 (US$16) bar bill.
Police have said he was drunk and under the influence of drugs at the time.
The verdict is likely to increase criticism of the country's graft-ridden court
system, where the rich and powerful are often let off with light sentences for
serious crimes, or escape jail time entirely due to alleged illnesses.
Adiguna's defense lawyer, M. Assegaf, said he would appeal the sentence while
lawyers for Yohannes's family called the sentence a "mockery" of justice.
The son of former state oil company Pertamina president Ibnu Sutowo, Adiguna is
also the younger brother of Ponco Sutowo, who is a major shareholder of the
Hilton Hotel.
Ibnu, who was implicated but never charged for vast corruption in Pertamina in
the 1970s, was an important friend of former president Soeharto. (**)
