Law Offices Run by Women a Possibility, Says Minister
Samir Al-Saadi, Arab News
JEDDAH, 18 October 2005 - Minister of Justice Dr. Abdullah Al-Asheikh
hinted that women's law offices in the Kingdom is a distinct possibility. "The
ministry is studying the matter as the market needs such offices due to
increasing activities of women," he said.
The minister was talking to reporters after attending the first meeting
of authorized arbitrators at Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sunday
night.
Prince Bandar ibn Salman ibn Muhammad, adviser to Custodian of the Two
Holy Mosques King Abdullah and chairman of the Saudi arbitration team, as well
as 300 arbitrators from various parts of the Kingdom attended.
During an open discussion with the minister, the Saudi lawyers requested
the minister to reduce the period of arbitration, which currently takes three
to six months. "We are working hard to cut down procedures in order to arrive
at quicker verdicts," Al-Asheikh said. He emphasized the need for further
improving the Kingdom's judicial system. "We are way behind compared to other
countries, because we have been relying on interpretations rather than the
texts of Islamic laws," he pointed out.
In his opening address, Mazen Batterjee, deputy chairman of the chamber,
called for quick solutions for the legal problems being faced by businessmen
and investors. He stressed the importance of revising the regulations related
to arbitration in the Kingdom in tune with international laws and agreements.
Wahib Al-Lami, a legal consultant, commended Prince Bandar's efforts to
improve the capabilities of Saudi arbitrators by holding meetings with
international experts and keeping them updated with Arab and non-Arab
arbitration laws. He stressed the need to revise the Kingdom's arbitration law
issued 22 years ago.
