Nepal: Comrade Sunil, red salute! [ A World to Win News Service ]
12 December 2005. A World to Win News Service. The Royal Nepal Army killed
Kim Bahadur Thapa (Comrade Sunil) on 30 November during the unilateral
ceasefire called for and observed by the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). A
Division Commander in the Peoples Liberation Army led by the party, Comrade
Thapa died when a Royal Nepal Army helicopter bombed a political training
meeting in the village of Zinwang in Rolpa district, Western Nepal. Division
Deputy Commander Comrade Nirmam also died in the same attack.
CPN(M) Chairman and Supreme Commander of the Peoples Liberation Army Comrade
Prachanda issued a statement on 1 December hailing Comrade Thapa and Comrade
Nirmam as great martyrs who sacrificed their lives to fulfil the Nepalese
peoples aspirations for peace, prosperity and Peoples Democracy.
The death of these two comrades has shaken people across the country and in
the western region in particular. By attacking people at a non-military
gathering just before the three-month cease-fire was to end, the feudal regime
of King Gyanendra Shah, backed by the imperialist powers, Indian expansionism
and other reactionary regimes, sought to provoke further war. This three-month
unilateral cease-fire, which the Maoists extended for another month on 1
December, has proved in practice that the proletarian internationalist
revolutionaries are not the source of violence. At the same time, the
experience of almost ten years of peoples war also shows that proletariat can
only end reactionary unjust wars by fighting just revolutionary wars. The
Nepalese people want total political change and a whole different kind of
society free of imperialist domination and feudalism.
Comrade Thapa was a devoted professional Maoist revolutionary of the
international proletariat and a skilled fighter as well. He was an outstanding
student and teacher of Marxism-Leninism-Maoism who upheld, defended and applied
it and helped in developing what the CPN(M) calls Prachanda Path.
He was born in 1961 to a lower middle class family in Gajul village, Rolpa,
the youngest of seven siblings. While studying at Prithvinarayan Campus,
Pokhara, he was attracted to and influenced by communist ideology. He studied
the writings of Mao Tsetung and engaged in discussions. He played an important
role in forging revolutionary student organisation while he was a teacher at
local schools from 1980 to 1983. Today, hundreds of his former students are
active in the Maoist movement.
In contact with the party since he began teaching, he formally joined the
party in 1990 and worked as a member of the Area Committee. He became secretary
of the party Area Committee in 1992, District Committee member in 1995 and in
1998 Secretary of the District Committee. In 1999 he became a member of the
partys Regional Bureau and in 2002 a member of the party Central Committee. He
was the deputy chief of the first Rolpa District Peoples Government and a
member of the Magarat Autonomous Republican Peoples Government. He was a bold,
undeterred and courageous personality in the party.
Comrade Sunil, as he was known in the party, was involved in many actions
during the gramin barga sangharsa (rural class struggle) before the peoples
war began in 1996. He took part the 1997 attack on the Lung Police post in
Puthan. In 1999, he was a party commissar for the Bhingri attack. He joined the
Peoples Liberation Army in 2001, and became a member of the commissariat of
the C Company of the PLAs stable battalion. That same year he participated in
the battle of Dang and the Kapurkot action, and in the following year the
Mangalsen action in Acham district, western Nepal, before taking the post of
full commissar in the Satbaria Lamahi action. In 2003 he served in that
capacity in the Murkatti encounter and battles at Lishne, Gam and Khara. When
the PLA formed a brigade, he became the commissar for that brigades Mangalsen
First Battalion, and fought at Arghakhachi, Jhinuwa and Hanning, where he was
wounded in the forehead, and Bhawang and Satipole. In 2005, he served in
the commissariat at the historic action at Mathura (Arghakhachi district), an
ambush at Batase Danda in the same district, the Satipole action and the
Kotgaun encounter.
He is survived by his wife, Bagamati Thapa, a full-time party activist, two
daughters and four out of their five sons. The second son, Comrade Bigyan, was
killed in an encounter with the enemy in Murkatti, Dang District.
