Indonesia yet to receive U.S. request to extradite man accused of killing teachers JAKARTA (AP): Indonesia has not yet received a request from the United States to extradite a man accused of killing two American teachers, a senior government official said. Indonesia has no extradition agreement with the United States, and it was unclear whether Jakarta would hand one of the suspects detained Wednesday over to Washington. The police have declared eight men -e all described as Papuan separatists -- as suspects, including Anthonius Wamang, who was indicted by a U.S. grand jury in 2004 for the murders of RickeyLynn Spier, 44, of Littleton, Colorado, and Leon Edwin Burgon, 71, of Sunriver, Oregon. "(Because) there is no such a practice (of extradition) in the past, it does not necessarily apply to this case. But a legal cooperation is possible between Indonesia and U.S.," Minister ofForeign Affairs Hassan Wirayuda said late Saturday. In the 2002 attack, the teachers' vehicle came under fire as they returned from a picnic close to a massive mine owned by New Orleans-based Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Mine Inc. in a mountainous region of Papua. Twelve people were detained Wednesday for their alleged role in the attack, but four have been released. The others were flown Sunday to Jakarta where they will be further questioned by police, National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam said. He said the police did not know about possible extradition, but there was a possibility that a trial would be held in Jakarta instead of Papua, because most of the witnesses were now in the capital.
