words no longer existed
when the earth was shaking
so hard
in bantul
our eyes were looking up high
the sky was red
the top of mount merapi
suddenly we looked toward bantul
words no longer existed
the river opak was agape with surprise
mute
when the shaking of the earth
toppled down houses
in one stroke
thunderously
death
took the lives
of victim after victim
scattered about
in the mountains of rubbish
in bantul
in klaten
in imogiri
in panggungharjo
in trumulyo
in sleman
in yogyakarta
there were no words
soaked by heavy monsoon rain
only the numbers were left behind
calculating disaster by the refugees tents
counting wounds by the cotton full of blood
counting hunger and thirst by the weak voices
only one word emerged
: help
passed from mouth to mouth
: help
crossing the borders of the cities
: help
crawling from one island to the next
crossing the oceans
: help
crisscrossing the entire earths surface
when the shaking of the earth was over
all we could do was count the graves we had to dig
by the drops of our tears
the beads of rosaries & prayers
for those who had left us
in their golden carriage
: amen
