Resolution 1701, death knell for UN?

By Hassan Hanizadeh

On Saturday, a group of Iranian university students
carried the coffin of the United Nations in a symbolic
funeral procession in front of the UN office in
Tehran.

This protest actually arose from the depths of the
hearts of the world’s nations because the UN Security
Council’s support of Israel during the Zionist
regime’s one-month assault on the Lebanese nation has
brought the credibility of the international body into
question.

The Security Council, which has become a puppet in the
hands of the major powers, has proven that it has lost
the legitimacy required to resolve major international
crises and that its resolutions are not worthy of
being implemented.

Resolution 1701, which was issued after a one-month
delay, will exacerbate regional crises rather than
help resolve the situation in Lebanon.

The recent resolution will also pave the way for
Israel to continue its atrocities against the Lebanese
and Palestinian nations.

Resolution 1701 not only fails to mention the
Zionists’ savage attack on the defenseless Lebanese
nation but also does not set a deadline for the
withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon.

In fact, the resolution has stipulated that the
Zionists can determine when the war should end,
although it is the duty of the Security Council to
call on both sides to put an end to all military
operations within 24 hours.

Another issue neglected in Resolution 1701 is the need
to establish a fact-finding committee to assess the
damage inflicted on Lebanon, identify the aggressor,
and supervise the unconditional withdrawal of the
Israeli army from southern Lebanon.

Although the resolution was drafted under the pressure
of the United States, Britain, and the Zionist lobby,
some 48 hours after it was issued, the Israeli army
expanded its military operations and killed dozens of
civilians during an attack on residential areas in
Lebanon.

This situation could eventually change global
criteria, such that instead of moving toward universal
respect for international law, the world will move
toward the law of the jungle, according to which might
makes right and the strong annihilate the weak.

The surprising performance of the Security Council in
authorizing the possessors of weapons of mass
destruction to use "all necessary action" and even
force creates a nightmare scenario for humanity and is
a harbinger of global chaos.

During the past month, the world witnessed the
inefficient performance of the Security Council, the
repercussions of which will primarily affect the major
powers.

The UN’s actions will cause the current wave of
terrorism to swell. Every terrorist group will feel
emboldened to take unilateral measures in the absence
of the instruments necessary to confront aggressors.

Although it is not yet clear if the detention of a
number of suspects on charges of plotting to bomb
British planes is a plot hatched by Scotland Yard, it
still serves as a serious warning for the West.

And no power will be able to quell the danger, because
when Muslims feel that international organizations are
under the influence of the major powers, they become
frustrated, and this frustration will lead to the
formation of underground movements bent on taking
revenge on the West.

Therefore, if the United Nations fails to take
immediate measures to redeem itself and restore its
lost credibility, the world will undoubtedly
experience grievous incidents in the future that will
affect global peace and security more than anytime in
history.
