Birthday Celebration in Harlem NEW YORK, August 14.-The St. Ambrose Episcopal Church in the heart of Harlem, New York, became the center of celebrations for the 80th birthday of President Fidel Castro, EFE reports. Many people, mostly from Latin America, celebrated the date and wished the Cuban head of state a prompt recovery. During the event, it was recalled that Fidel has twice visited Harlem, a predominantly African-American neighborhood also with a sizeable Hispanic population. The first time was in 1960, shortly after the triumph of the Revolution, when he stayed in the Teresa Hotel, and the second in 1995, during a visit to the city on the occasion of a summit for the 50th anniversary of the United Nations. The party was complete with a cake covered with 80 candles, decorated in blue, white and red, the colors of the Cuban flag, and displaying the message "Happy Birthday Fidel." There were also photos of Fidel and of Che Guevara. As part of the festivities a documentary was shown on the five Cubans unjustly imprisoned in the U.S. for combating terrorism. "We are celebrating Fidel's birthday and there are people here from various religious ideologies, who admire Fidel in one or another way," said Luis Miranda, director of the New York Casa de las Américas, and one of the speakers at the event. Other speakers included activist Vicente "Panama" Alba and Episcopalian Pastor Luis Barrios, who declared that with this event they were celebrating Castro's life.
