* Sign the Petition - No War with Iran!* Posted by: "Carol Moore in DC" endviolence@ carolmoore. net <mailto:endviolence@ carolmoore. net> carolmooreindc Wed Oct 4, 2006 10:47 am (PST) FROM: Kevin M. Martin Executive Director Peace Action Education Fund
* *PLEASE FORWARD TO YOUR FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES!* * We learned only last week that the President gave a "prepare to deploy" order to the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower and its attendant strike force. Their destination is the Persian Gulf, off the coast of Iran. Is this simply an escalation of the administration' s saber-rattling? An attempt to provoke Iran and create a Tonkin Gulf-like rationale to justify military strikes? Or is this actually the first step of planned military action against Iran, with the administration' s declarations of attempted diplomacy just as phony as they were before the Iraq war? We do not intend to wait to find out. We need to move immediately to prevent a war with Iran, and that is why I am asking you to start today by signing the "No War with Iran" petition http://democracyina ction.org/ dia/organization sORG/Peaceact/ petition. jsp?petition_ KEY=358 and forwarding it to your friends and colleagues. Mr. Bush has been threatening military action against Iran for several months despite intense international and domestic opposition. Many of us might find it hard to believe that he would launch a war when the existing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq grow worse by the day, and the military is already stretched beyond its capacity. However, that could be a fatal miscalculation for those of us demanding an end to this administration' s hegemonic militarism. Given his ongoing, near delusional support for the disastrous war in Iraq, and his continued assertion that "all options are on the table" with regard to Iran, this President clearly still favors destruction over diplomacy. Is this any way to conduct diplomacy? Tell this administration that we will not tolerate another war! <http://www.democrac yinaction. org/dia/track. jsp?key=20205396 5&url_num= 4&url=http: //democracyinact ion.org/dia/ organizationsORG /Peaceact/ petition. jsp?petition_ KEY=358> <http://www.democrac yinaction. org/dia/track. jsp?key=20205396 5&url_num= 4&url=http: //democracyinact ion.org/dia/ organizationsORG /Peaceact/ petition. jsp?petition_ KEY=358%3E> It is impossible to overemphasize the horrific consequences that could flow from a war with Iran. Thousands more innocent civilians would be killed, anti-American and anti-western terrorism would escalate (as our own intelligence agencies have concluded it has as a result of the Iraq war), attacks on Israel would intensify, Iraq would be further destabilized, oil prices could skyrocket. It is not impossible to imagine a World War III scenario, and in fact many of Mr. Bush's most fervent supporters are already looking forward to what they describe as a "clash of civilizations" between the West and the Muslim world. That is why we must begin by confronting them now, and building public opposition to stop this war before it starts. The "No War in Iran" petition <http://www.democrac yinaction. org/dia/track. jsp?key=20205396 5&url_num= 5&url=http: //democracyinact ion.org/dia/ organizationsORG /Peaceact/ petition. jsp?petition_ KEY=358> <http://www.democrac yinaction. org/dia/track. jsp?key=20205396 5&url_num= 5&url=http: //democracyinact ion.org/dia/ organizationsORG /Peaceact/ petition. jsp?petition_ KEY=358%3E> is an initial step, with more to follow. Please sign the petition, and pass it on to your friends and colleagues. We need to start raising our voices now, while there is still an opportunity for them to be heard. Sincerely, P.S. Clearly, the overheated rhetoric on Iran is designed to sway voters towards Mr. Bush's political allies and his issues. We cannot experience another election day in fear, and we cannot allow his actions to paralyze our work for peace. With your help, we will refuse to allow Mr. Bush to create a conflict with Iran that would distract us from the tragically misguided occupation of Iraq.
