Toshiba, NEC Electronics, Fujitsu eye joint development of 32nm chip

TOKYO, July 25 KYODO*

Toshiba Corp., NEC Electronics Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd. are holding talks to
discuss joint development of an advanced system large-scale integrated
circuit chip that can substantially enhance the performance of mobile phones
and other digital devices, sources familiar with the matter said Wednesday.

The three companies are hoping to share the cost of developing process
technology for the 32-nanometer system LSI chip, which is estimated at more
than 100 billion yen, in an effort to compete with major overseas rivals
such as Intel Corp. of the United States and Samsung Electronics Co. of
South Korea, the sources said.
