*'Amphibian Ark' project launched to protect frogs, salamanders*

TOKYO, Sept. 11 KYODO.

Zoos and aquariums in some 35 countries, including Japan, have launched a
joint artificial breeding project for amphibians, such as frogs and
salamanders, to save them from extinction, its organizers said Tuesday.

The project, dubbed ''Amphibian Ark,'' involves the participating
organizations artificially breeding endangered amphibians from tropical
forests, they said. The amphibians are eventually to be returned to the
natural environment.
