April 14, 2009 Hamas surprised by Egypt's Hezbollah allegations GAZA CITY/CAIRO (DPA) -- Hamas on Monday said it was 'surprised' by Egypt's accusations that a cell of the Lebanese Islamic resistance movement Hezbollah was operating in Egypt. In a statement Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, said it had no knowledge of any planned arms smuggling by Hezbollah, but such an operation 'is not a crime.' The statement from Hamas came amid confusion over a possible police operation against Lebanese nationals in Egypt. Sources from the Egyptian Interior Ministry initially told the German news agency, DPA, that security forces were pursuing 10 Lebanese nationals in the desert around the central Sinai town of Nakhil on suspicion of being Hezbollah operatives. But later Monday, an officer from North Sinai Security denied those reports. 'We do not know of a security blockade around the city of Nakhil in search of Hezbollah suspects,' he told DPA on condition of anonymity. Several, overlapping security forces police North Sinai. In a televised address at the weekend, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah acknowledged that a Lebanese man detained in December by Egyptian security forces was a Hezbollah member, and that he had been providing 'logistical support' to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. But Nasrallah denied accusations that the group was planning attacks in Egypt. 'Bringing weapons to Gaza is not a crime at all,' Hamas said in its statement Monday. 'We express our solidarity with our brothers in Hezbollah... resisting the Zionist occupation is a duty and an honor for every Muslim.' [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
