Women get abused after giving birth, says survey

Manama: Around 91 per cent of women in Bahrain who are victims of
domestic violence are battered after they give birth, compared to six per cent
who are abused before they become mothers, a study shows.
Sex-related problems between husbands and wives constitute a major reason
for the violence, said 80 per cent of the women covered by a survey
commissioned by the Bahrain Women's Union.
"The number of Bahraini women who were abused in the last ten years was
2,628. The figure includes 74 cases of violence against fiancées," the report
said.
Around one third of the women were in the 21-30 year-old range, followed
by women who were less than 20 years old (24%).
The report said that there were 32 cases of violence against women who
were above 50 years old.
Around 40 per cent of battered women have at least a high school diploma,
a figure that is slightly higher than that of those who did not finish
secondary education.
Housewives represented 56 per cent of all the victims of violence, while
the rest (44 per cent) had regular jobs.
Husbands, at 89.9 per cent, constituted the major source of violence
against women, followed by brothers.
Physical violence rates tend to increase as the family's economic income
goes lower, while verbal abuse is more prevalent among well-to-do households.
