Qatar's first U-13 football festival for girls will be held today at the
Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence with support from the FIFA, the chief of
the country's women's sports body said yesterday.

Organised by Aspire Academy and Qatar Women Sports Committee (QWSC), the
event will see about 100 girls from 10 schools participating, QWSC president
Ahlam al-Manaa said.

She explained that the committee has organised, since 2005, training
courses to create a team of women capable of refereeing and coaching in order
to help the development of the game in the country.

Al-Manaa said that Aspire Academy and QWSC planned to organise such
festivals two or three times every year.

"Only women can attend the first festival, because things need to be
taken step by step", she said, adding, however, that "male supervisors and
trainers will be present."

The official also revealed that QWSC is looking to establish an academy
for sports excellence for women.

"We are also likely to participate in the Asian football championship for
females under 12 years old, which will be held in February."
The director of special projects at Aspire Academy, Andreas Bleicher,
said that the academy has tried for years to improve the levels of girls
playing sports and succeeded in establishing facilities for the same.
Monica Staab from the FIFA said that Qatar had the largest number of
women playing football in the Arab and Islamic region, despite the very tough
social and cultural prejudices which lead many to think that playing football
will reduce their marriage chances.
