PICTURE: T K Nasar About 100 kilometres from Doha in the middle of a rugged, abandoned and creepy spot of the desert, the first Qatari feature horror film is being shot, in a perfectly spooky environment, particularly at night. Clockwise, a 110-minute duration film is about a legend in the Gulf folklore that depicts "Fjeri Art" or the music taught by genies to humans. Speaking to Gulf Times at the sets, Qatari film director Khalifa al-Muraikhi said that the film portrayed "Saad," an old practitioner of "Fjeri Art," who finds himself left out and forgotten. Saad becomes a merchant of watches in the Souq, but always wished to return to the past, where he is a prominent individual in his community. One of these clocks, turn backwards to bring back the thirties, where Saad narrates his story. Al-Muraikhi said that as part of the preparations for the film, a group of technicians were flown from Mumbai, "a perfect film industry location," and another from Thailand to work in particular on the storm scene, which is the most difficult and expensive and which shows a sinking and crashed ship, as well as the death of many people. "This complex scene is based on a very highly skilled technique of producing waves and debris and has been shot for the first time in the Arab world," he stated. He also added that professionals from the group who were part of the Hollywood blockbuster "Perfect Storm", as well as audio technicians from Canada and Poland are among the Clockwise team. The film director said that the film, would be screened in late April in Qatar, Gulf and Arab countries, as well as at international festivals in the US, France and Spain. Al-Muraikhi also maintained that he is focused on embarking on a cinematic path to accumulate experience in the industry that could well be the basis of a "Qatari Cinema." He explained that the costly production was funded by the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage. "The budget has exceeded 10million Qatari riyals," he stated and added that the "the storm scene alone had a budget of its own." The film director observed that the actors of Clockwise were regular faces in theatre and television, but who had made their way into cinema through training. Al-Muraikhi pointed out that the film had scary scenes in particular when the genies are depicted as appearing like humans, but with different eye and skin colours, as well as a different way of movement. "We however did not depict them as having long teeth like the vampires," he stated. Al-Muraikhi also revealed plans for another feature film. "The script would be completely different, but it is currently being studied," he said. The new film will highlight how globalisation has changed young people, their dreams and aspirations and which could also sometimes lead to serious problems. Meanwhile, a Qatari actor said that Clockwise comprised issues for human thought and also had a philosophical touch "I think the film is one that should be screened at festivals," he said. He pointed out that the director al-Muraikhi had tried hard to halt the boredom of the philosophical touch with thrilling scenes. Producer Hamad Ali Ali explained that the ministry did not look to the film in terms of profitability, as it is the first Qatari feature film. "The ministry wanted to show good potential and to produce a movie of a high level as part of the 'Qatar the Capital of Arab Culture 2010' plan," he stated. Ali also revealed that the ministry had approved the budget after two years of study." [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
