The Indonesian embassy yesterday held a function to mark Mother's Day.
Mother's Day in Indonesia is commemorated on December 22, in honour of
the first Indonesian Women's Congress held on December 22, 1928, an embassy
official said.
Yesterday's function held in co-operation with the Qatar's Indonesian
Ladies Association, consisted of a series of activities, beginning with an
indoor flag ceremony.
Embassy's chargè d'Affaires ad interim, Riyadi Asirdin, presided over the
ceremony.
Asirdin said Indonesia was working to guarantee gender equality and women
empowerment, two of the eight Millennium Development Goals.
The envoy referred to the steps the Indonesian government was taking to
integrate gender equality at all levels of education by 2015. "Gender equality
will be integrated into the existing infrastructure to reduce the strain on the
girl child," said Asirdin.
At the end of the ceremony, three Indonesian women who performed well in
social, education and business fields were honoured with awards. The women were
Fajriati M Baharuddin, Yoyoh Rokayah Tamyi and Keke Mbouw.
After the ceremony, an Indonesian physician, Rakhmat Soebekti, delivered
a lecture on swine flu. A bazaar featuring Indonesian food and a men-only
cooking competition were the highlights of the event. In the cooking
competition, the participants were asked to use their creativity and skill to
create noodle-based dishes.
