(Antara Photo) Indonesia Court Sentences Nasrudin's Killers Tangerang District Court on Wednesday handed down five lengthy jail terms in the first verdicts issued in the high-profile slaying of businessman Nasrudin Zulkarnaen, heralding a likely heavier sentence for former antigraft czar Antasari Azhar, who is accused of masterminding the murder. Daniel Daen Sabon was given 18 years in jail for having shot the victim twice in the head, while his four co-defendants - Heri Santosa, Hendrikus Kia Walen, Eduardus Ndopo Mbete and Fransiskus Tadon Kerans - each received 17 years in separate hearings at the same court for their roles in the murder. "The punishment is not meant as retribution," said Judge Muhammad Asnun, who presided over Daniel's trial. "It carries a correctional purpose so that when the defendant completes his term, he will return to the community as a good citizen." He dismissed arguments that the five defendants had believed they were assigned to carry out a "state duty" to terrorize Nasrudin, who was described as a threat to national security, and that the fatal shots were actually fired from afar by a secret police team. Daniel has said that he fired the shots at Nasrudin just to intimidate him, not to kill him. "The defendant himself has admitted in this room that he fired two shots, it has been shown in previous hearings that Nasrudin posed no threat to national security and no other team was involved in the murder," Asnun said. "We consider the defense's arguments groundless." Daniel was handed a longer prison sentence because he "has twisted facts; his actions have caused misery to the family of Nasrudin, who used to be their sole breadwinner; the defendant accepted payment for the murder; he has shown no remorse and has been jailed in the past in a different criminal case," said the judge, reading the verdict aloud to the court. After the verdict was delivered, Daniel's lawyer, Rocky Awondatu, said he would file an appeal, which brought an immediate response from the prosecutor, Raharjo. "Because the defense insists on continuing the legal battle, we also must challenge the verdict, which delivered a sentence well below our demand," Raharjo said. The prosecution had recommended life sentences for all five defendants. In separate hearings, the panels of judges used similar legal reasoning to convict the four other defendants. While group leader Eduardus said he would appeal his verdict, Heri, Fransiskus and Hendrikus asked for a week to decide on possible appeals. "I only followed an order to carry out my duty to the state," said Heri, who is a recent widower and now a single parent of one. He was the only defendant to have apologized to Nasrudin's family during the trials. Heri was found guilty of driving the motorcycle that carried Daniel during the drive-by shooting outside a Tangerang golf club on March 14. Nasrudin died the next day in the hospital. Hendrikus was found guilty of having been the "field coordinator" in the murder, and Eduardus of having recruited the men and of persuading them to carry out the murder for Rp 500 million ($52,500). The court found that Fransiskus had bought the gun used in the murder and accompanied Daniel and Heri in a rented car as they tailed Nasrudin's vehicle. Four other defendants in the case - Antasari, middle-ranking police officer Wiliardi Wizar, businessman Sigid Haryo Wibisono and alleged middleman Jerry Hermawan Lo - are being tried separately at the South Jakarta District Court. Prosecutors have accused Antasari of ordering the murder because of a love triangle involving him, Nasrudin and the businessman's third wife, Rani Juliani.
