MAKKAH: A Saudi woman divorcee and her young daughter are homeless and
living near a car park in Makkah after their landlord kicked them out of their
home. The landlord refused to renew the tenancy despite the rent being paid on
time.

"For two weeks we have been living in a makeshift tent in the open at the
mountains of the Al-Faiyha residential area without anyone coming to end our
predicament," Ghaneemah, who is in her 40s, told Arab News. She made the walls
of the tent from the few pieces of furniture she took with her when she left
the house and its ceiling from torn clothes.

"My troubles began when my ex-husband was imprisoned, leaving me in
complete poverty with three sons and a daughter. We had nowhere to go after we
were kicked out from the house rented for us by the Ministry of Social
Affairs," she said.

Ghaneemah said she left her three sons, the eldest of whom is 13, with
their father's family and came to live in the open with her daughter Khulood.
"The tent lacks the basic amenities. We suffer from the soaring heat during the
day and cold during the night," she said.

Ghaneemah said she tried not to be noisy in the evenings to avoid
attention from intruders. "Despite the fact that the area is densely populated
and the traffic police station is near us, I am always scared during the
nights."

Ghaneemah and her four children live on SR800 a month, which is paid by
the Ministry of Social Affairs.

"This is not enough to even buy food," she said, adding this was the
reason she left her sons with her in-laws.

She said she chose to live in this mountainous area to avoid awkward
questions from people.

"I am not looking for luxury. I just want to live decently with my
children since their father left us," she said.

Ghaneemah was astonished that no one so far has come to help her but she
remains optimistic of receiving aid soon. "I am hoping that one of these good
people will give us a house to live in."
