Sri Mulyani to Lawmakers: Prove Bank Century Bailout Was Illegal

A day after four party factions named Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati
among those most responsible for the "illegal" bailout of PT Bank Century, the
minister defended her decision and said it should not be linked to crimes
committed by the bank's former owners and management.

"We took the decision to prevent a crisis - don't connect it with the crimes
engaged in by some people unless it is proven that when I made the policy
decision, I was colluding with them," Sri Mulyani told a news conference on
Wednesday.

Sri Mulyani and Vice President Boediono were accused of being ultimately
responsible for the bailout by four factions, including two from President
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's ruling coalition - Golkar Party and Prosperous
Justice Party (PKS).

The finger-pointing came as the factions on the House of Representatives
special committee investigating the bailout presented their final conclusions.

Sri Mulyani said her decision was not linked to the crimes committed by former
Bank Century owner Robert Tantular, who is now serving a five-year jail term
for embezzling money from the bank's customers. Two other former owners, Rafat
Ali Rizvi and Hesham al Warraq, both foreign nationals, are on the run and
could soon be tried in absentia.

Sri Mulyani said that as finance minister, she headed the Financial System
Stability Committee (KSSK) and that it was her job to prevent a possible repeat
of the 1997-98 currency and banking crisis. She said she believed she had
carried out her duties according to the law.

She also stressed that officials were supposed to be protected by the state
when carrying out their duties.

"If we make policy, within our authority, and we are criminalized," she added,
"people would not see anything getting done in Indonesia."

The minister, who in 2008 was named by Forbes magazine as the 23rd most
powerful woman in the world, said she believed she and the KSSK team had never
strayed out of their legal parameters. Any problems, she said, would have been
in documents that, in hindsight, could have been improved.

"If there were any [violations] they would be merely administrative or human
error, but not major sins," she said.

The PKS named Sri Mulyani, along with Boediono, who was central bank governor
at the time of the 2008 bailout, and other officials from the KSSK, the central
bank and the Deposit Insurance Agency (LPS), as being responsible for what it
said was the improper bailout of Bank Century.

While lawmakers do not have the power to prosecute state officials, the PKS and
Golkar have called on the police and the Corruption Eradication Committee (KPK)
to investigate possible graft related to the case.

Asked if she felt the House special committee was targeting certain officials,
Sri Mulyani said "each party has different goals, rhetoric, approaches, but it
is the public who will judge."
