IRANIAN police raided a villa in the capital Tehran where they said an "illegal
concert" attended by allegedly drunk boys and girls was being held and arrested
80 people.

"After receiving tips and after obtaining a judicial warrant, (the police)
raided a place where an illegal concert was being held," Tehran prosecutor
Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi told the hard-line Kayhan newspaper.

"Eighty boys and girls who were improperly dressed and were drunk have been
arrested."

Dolatabadi said the authorities raided the villa yesterday and confiscated
homemade and foreign alcohol. Alcohol is banned in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

"Five others who were selling tickets for the concert for $30 to $35 have also
been apprehended," the prosecutor added.

Iranians can organise concerts of traditional music, ethnic folklore music and
licensed pop music only after appropriate permissions are secured from Iran's
Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance.

Mixed-sex parties are illegal in Iran, where it is also forbidden to consume
alcohol in public or private and attend gatherings wearing "improper" dresses.
Dancing to Western music is also frowned upon.

In 2007, police arrested 230 people in a raid on an illegal indie rock concert
in a garden near Tehran. Several reports branded the partygoers as Satan
worshippers
