JEDDAH: A website belonging to a former imam of the Grand Mosque in Makkah was
hacked last week.

Anyone visiting Sheikh Adil Al-Kalbani's website at the time would be greeted
with a blank page with a picture at the top of the movie character The Joker,
who the hacker had apparently named himself after.

At the bottom of the page is a statement criticizing the sheikh for stating
that music and singing is permitted in Islam.

Al-Kalbani's website featured a number of articles and lectures as well as a
question and answer section allowing him to interact with visitors.

In March 2008 he was appointed by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King
Abdullah as an imam of the Grand Mosque.

Recently he came under fire for saying in public that singing and music is
permissible in Islam. "Whoever did this, I can only say that I feel sorry for
them. The reason behind your act is perhaps my statements that came as a shock
to you," Kalbani, who is reportedly visiting Europe, told Al-Madinah daily.

"You got used to these beliefs because your parents raised you that way, and it
is difficult for you now to think otherwise... Your act only shows your poor
judgment. Opinions from all visitors are posted on my website so people can
make their own judgments."
