The Iranian-and Syrian-backed Hezbollah group, which battled Israel four years ago, took no part in the exchange of fire. There was also no sign of any extensive Israeli preparations for a large-scale operation; an early indication the clash might not trigger a wider conflict. Security sources and witnesses said there was no more fighting, but tension remained high. The Lebanese and Israeli armies gave different descriptions of the events leading up to the skirmish, while the UN peacekeeping force stationed in southern Lebanon said it had yet to ascertain the circumstances leading to the bloodshed. The Lebanese army said an Israeli patrol had crossed the technical line of the border even though UN peacekeepers in the area told it to stop. "A Lebanese army force then repelled it using rocket propelled grenades. A clash happened in which the enemy forces used machine guns and tank fire targeting army posts and civilian houses," it said. Major-General Gadi Eisenkot, head of Israel's northern command, said a Lebanese sniper squad fired at officers inside Israeli territory. He said an Israeli tank came under fire from a rocket-propelled grenade, and when it missed, the tank fired and killed the RPG squad. UN calls for "maximum restraint" UN peacekeepers in Lebanon (UNIFIL), who were in the area when the incident took place, appealed to both sides to exercise "maximum restraint". An emergency meeting of Lebanon's Higher Council for Defence headed by President Michel Sulaiman held the Israel accountable and said it would complain to the UN Security Council. Two Lebanese soldiers and a journalist were killed, the council said. Earlier, security sources said three soldiers had died. The Israeli military said the dead officer was a battalion commander with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Israel's shekel currency fell against the dollar due to concern about the incident. A new war could be even more devastating than the last. Tension has increased since Israel accused Syria in April of transferring long-range Scud missiles to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Syria has rejected the allegation. Israel has threatened to attack Lebanese infrastructure in any new conflict. In 2006 it bombed bridges, fuel tanks, radar stations and Beirut airport, while Hezbollah fired 4,000 rockets into Israel. Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has also threatened to hit Israel's airport and ships in any future conflict. Nasrallah was due to address supporters in a pre-scheduled event to mark the end of the 2006 war. "A clash between Israeli and Lebanese troops along the border ... will raise diplomatic tensions but is unlikely to lead to more fighting," research firm Eurasia Group said. Syrian President Bashar Al Assad telephoned Sulaiman to offer support to and Prime Minister Saad Al Hariri spoke to a number of leaders, including French President Nicolas Sarkozy and asked for France's assistance in ending what he called "Israeli aggressive practices against Lebanon and its army". Israeli complaint Israel's Foreign Ministry said it would file a complaint at the United Nations over the clash, accusing Beirut of violating the 2006 Security Council resolution that ended the war. An Israeli helicopter fired two missiles at a Lebanese army post near Adaisseh, destroying an armoured personnel carrier. Witnesses said Israeli artillery also fired at the village. "The smoke was so thick it was hard to see the damage to the homes. I heard several shots, but it was hard to tell from which side," a Reuters witness said. The fatalities were the first suffered by either side since the 2006 war in which 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed in Lebanon, along with 158 Israelis, mostly soldiers. A 13,000-strong UN peacekeeping force known as UNIFIL now patrols southern Lebanon under a UN resolution that expanded its mandate and ended the war on Aug. 14, 2006. The incident occurred a day after rockets that Israel suspects were fired from Egypt by Islamist militants struck Jordan's Red Sea port of Aqaba, killing a man. http://khaleejtimes .com/DisplayArti cleNew.asp? section=middleea st <http://khaleejtimes .com/DisplayArti cleNew.asp? section=middleea st&xfile= data/middleeast/ 2010/august/ middleeast_ august72. xml> &xfile=data/ middleeast/ 2010/august/ middleeast_ august72. xml Israeli army returns to border clash point (Reuters) 4 August 2010 The Israeli army moved a crane back into a tense frontier zone with Lebanon to complete a tree-pruning mission that led to the deadliest violence along the border since a 2006 war. A day after a senior Israeli officer, two Lebanese soldiers and a Lebanese journalist were killed in a rare clash between the Israeli and Lebanese armies, Israel appeared keen to show it would not be deterred from operating in the area. ”We are continuing to operate. It will not be legitimate if they try to disrupt today, and we will have to respond,” Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said on Israel Radio. The United States and the United Nations urged both sides to show restraint amid fears of wider conflict, and the border zone fell quiet. Lebanon’s Hezbollah group, which battled Israel in the 2006 conflict, stayed out of the fighting on Tuesday. It began after an Israeli mechanical arm reached over a frontier fence to trim a tree whose branches, Israel’s military said, were tripping anti-infiltration devices. Israel said its soldiers were operating within Israeli territory and the tree was south of a border line drawn by the United Nations after the Israeli military’s 2000 withdrawal from south Lebanon. Lebanon said the tree was inside its territory. A U.N. peacekeeping force that patrols southern Lebanon said one of its technical teams would try on Wednesday to determine exactly where the border line runs in the area. Returning to the site of the clash, an Israeli crane, guarded by soldiers, cut down three trees, witnesses said. Lebanese troops deployed at a distance from the fence and peacekeepers from the U.N. force known as UNIFIL patrolled the Lebanese border village of Adaisseh. Security Cabinet Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, leader of Iranian- and Syrian-backed Hezbollah, said he did not think Tuesday’s violence would lead to a bigger conflict, but there are reasons for worry. He said Hezbollah would not stand silent if Israel attacked the Lebanese army in the future. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened his security cabinet as both sides prepared to bury their dead. He said after the clash Israel would respond aggressively to any future attempt “to disrupt the calm along the northern border. In the Gaza Strip, where there has been an upsurge of violence over the past week, Israeli fire killed a Palestinian militant and wounded another. The Israeli military said aircraft had fired at Palestinians who approached the Gaza border fence. The United States, Israel’s main backer, called for both Israel and Lebanon to exercise restraint. The last thing that we want to see is that this incident expand into something more significant, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said in Washington. The U.N. Security Council also voiced concern. Tuesday’s deaths were the first on either side since the 2006 war in which 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed in Lebanon, along with 158 Israelis, mostly soldiers. A new war could be more devastating than the last. Tension has increased since April, when Israel accused Syria of transferring long-range Scud missiles to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, an allegation Syria has rejected. Israel has threatened to attack Lebanese infrastructure in any new conflict. In 2006 it bombed bridges, fuel tanks, radar stations and Beirut airport, while Hezbollah fired 4,000 rockets into Israel. 'http://7days. ae/storydetails. php?id=97143& page=localnews& title='Tree was on our side' Tree was on our side Thursday 5 Aug, 2010 UN peacekeepers have said a cypress tree, which triggered a border battle with Lebanese soldiers, was in Israeli territory, contradicting Lebanese claims that their frontier was breached. The clash, which ignited after an Israeli soldier pruned the tree, killed an Israeli officer, two Lebanese soldiers and a Lebanese journalist. The incident marked the most serious face-off between the two countries since Israel and the Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah fought a brief war in 2006. The Israeli soldier was cutting back the tree, something Israel does to improve its sight line into Lebanon, when Lebanese forces fired a warning. The Lebanese army and a witness said UN peacekeepers intervened to ask the Israeli to stop cutting the tree, but Israel refused. Both sides claim the tree was in their territory, but Lebanon acknowledged yesterday that the tree was south of an official, UN-drawn boundary known as the Blue Line separating the countries. The line was drawn in 2000 following the end of an Israeli occupation of south Lebanon that began with a war in 1982. However, Lebanese Information Minister Tarek Mitri said his country disputes the Blue Line demarcation in certain areas, including the village of Adeisseh where the clash took place. ”UNIFIL established that the trees being cut by the Israeli army are located south of the Blue Line on the Israeli side,” said force spokesman Lieutenant Naresh Bhatt. He said the peacekeepers were still investigating the clash. Israel said the UN announcement clearly corroborated its version of events. ”Our routine activity was conducted entirely south of the frontier on the Israeli side. The Lebanese Army opened fire without justification,” government spokesman Mark Regev said. Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak sought yesterday to calm the situation. “I hope we will have a quiet summer and things return to their normal course,” he said, speaking on Israel Radio.
