This problem is not really dependent on Mac OS X.
It can come up in any installation.

Have a close look where LaTeX found pause.sty:

 > (/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.os/tex/latex/macros/contrib/supported/

This is most probably an outdated version, which has unfortunately
crept into the distribution of pdfslide years ago.
This should be fixed in the current online distribution of pdfslide,
but it may take some time until the old copy has vanished from all
distributions, CDs etc. in use.
Remove the copy from the pdfslide folder and things should work as
expected.
